News
Dan is leading the trip this Sunday and 18 peoplr have given there names to him. The club trip is now full and is therefore closed for further participants in as much as he is not prepared to work with any more than these people in this dynamic environment. He hopes to be able to run another trip later in the year. For those people who have committed to attending the trip I will brief location at Cartgate when we meet on Sunday morning.
I'm afraid I will have to postpone the Piddle Paddle on the 12th Nov. as I have been unable to reconoiter the access piont and have a general look at water levels so I hope to put a date out for December/January in a couple of weeks. I have had several people expressing an interest in the trip so it will definately go ahead some time. Thanks, Geoff Oliver.
Sunday Sessions
Just a reminder - Sunday sessions will continue throughout the winter for as long as people turn up. Please be aware that, as the rivers are now gettting some water in them, many of the coaches will be on various trips so there might not be anyone to open the baot store. If you have your own gear, then you can paddle at the reservoir on Sunday as long as you stick to the club rules re number of paddlers and competencies. If you've forgotten the rules are, you can find them on the website at www.sbd.cc/documents/operations.html
Swimathon - 12th December
Sherborne School are running a swimathon - see attached. As we're a regular user of the pool on staurday evenings, there ought to be a few swimmers amongst who would like to take part.
With so many coaches away next weekend (Llandysul etc) I have had to cancel next Saturday's pool session. So the next one will be a general session on 12th November with Tracey and Kevin looking after you. See web site for details.
Poole Harbour Trip Saturday 29th October 2011.
I have made a check of the forecast for tomorrow and unfortunately it is likely to be up to Force 3 winds. Unfortunately this is too strong at this particular venue for General Purpose Boats.
So I am cancelling the green paddle tomorrow and upgrading it to a Amber paddle. This means that only Sea Kayaks will be taken on the trip. If you have any concerns about the conditions as a Sea Kayak paddler or would like to discuss the reasons why I have cancelled the "green" paddle please call or email .
For those of you who are not coming there will be other trips!
Regards,
Roger
Pool Sessions
Next Saturday's pool session is a general session with Ian and Caroline looking after you. Bring your own boats, do your own thing. Book via the club mobile phone number between 6-9pm Monday to Thursday until all 10 places are booked.
Equipment (I) - Mud
Now that water levels at the reservoir had dropped dramatically, we have got down to the silty layer and many of the boats are being put back on the racks covered in mud! The club has obtained two orange buckets and sponges for you to clean the outside AND inside when you've finished your session; use them to clean the mud off equipment and please empty the boats of water before putting them back on the racks.
Equipment (II) - Broken Bits
Over the summer some of the equipment has been damaged. If you notice damage or missing parts, please mark it with some red/white stripy tape (on top of the cupboard) so that we can get it repaired/replaced. Also, please fill in the equipment maintenance book on the bookshelf so that we can see what the specific issue is. If the we don't know its broken, we can't fix it!
It you see equipment with red/white stripy tape on it, please do not use it - it may be damaged to the point where it is unsafe.
Equipment (III) - For Sale
If you don't like using the club's muddy, damaged equipment, why don't you treat yourself to a new boat? Early Christmas present? Please see for sale page.
Membership
We have a total of 279 members on the books with a further 40 on the waiting list.
Sea Paddling Programme
Pieces of Eight, Pieces of Eight. Please find attached the programme as discussed this Wednesday night. Look forward to seeing you in the water. (Thats an old Pirate/plank joke)
Haha.
Cap'n Rog
Pool Hospital Charity are organising a Charity Dragon Boat Race. Entry £20 per paddler with the hope the team will raise sponsorship as well. Details from ben@sbd.cc or nick@sbd.cc
As the Open Canoes are not availiable this weekend (they are away on a Duke of Edinburgh Trip with the Scouts) the Yoof day is cancelled. If there is time it will be replanned later in the year.
AS Watersports will be hosting the South West Canoe Show on October 1st. So why not drop down - lots of boats to try, discounts on equipment and much more.
This year has seen the club support and invest in increasing one of our most visible assets - the volunteer coaches who give their time to support the training courses we all attend
In April, four of our BCU level 2k coaches successfully completed the transfer to the new BCU/UKCC level 2 coaching standard - Dan Brown, Geoff Oliver, Andy Rossall and Roger Willoughby,
In July, four more of our coaches successfully completed their BCU/UKCC level 2 assessments - Athol Petts and Brian Phillips transferred from the old BCU level 2k and Simon Champion and Chris Harper completed the transfer from BCU/UKCC level 1.
This weekend saw another group of 7 candidates undertake the BCU/UKCC level 1 coaching and assessment course; this started on Thursday August 4th and culminated on Sunday August 7th after 4 days of coaching and assessment. It is with great pleasure that we can announce that all 7 of the candidates successfully passed their assessment! Congratulations go out to (in alphabetical order)
James Bell, Mark Cordy, Lauren David, Caroline Doherty, John Doherty, Jim Howard and Sammy Vellum.
In addition, Ian Robson also completed the last tick on his level 1 coaching session.
Well done.
August Newsletter is now available and uploaded here along with all the previous issues back to the start of 2010
Simon is arranging for a 3 star surf training and assessment course (back to back days) if there is enough interest within the club to arrange / take over an entire course in September/October this year.
If anyone is interested, please could you email him .
As the club is growing, it has been increasingly clear that we need more coaches to support our 280 plus members. This year we have successfully trained 8 BCU / UKCC level 2 coaches and this weekend sees the training of an additional 10 level 1 coaches. Training and assessment will take place at the reservoir on August 4th / 5th / 6th / 7th
If you are paddling, please treat those being trained with extra care and courtesy. Thanks
Frome's Market Yard slalom, a national ranking event, is on this Sunday (17th) - see attached flyer info. It's suitable for all paddlers, but 1* plus will probably get the most benefit. This is a low key event on easy water, ideal for paddlers' (of any age) first attempt at slaom, and compliments your PaddlePower progression. Geoff will be there taking piccys and acting as Chair of the Jury (maybe).
Check this link out for piccys from last year - here
Let Geoff know if you are thinking of attending - and he'll look out for you. Any queries then just email him.
This is a general whinge-o-gram for a few things that the coaches requested I bring to your attention:
